Arkleton Trust Fellowships

Rural Community Strategies for Managing the Economic and Social Impacts of Climate Change

Call for Applications

[Notes for Applicants]

The Arkleton Trust seeks applications for fellowships to be made from the Bernard Conyers and the Arkleton Trust Funds. The purpose of the fellowships is to provide younger and mid-career professionals working as rural development practitioners with the opportunity to widen their experience of the preparation of rural communities for climate change and post-Kyoto measures to mitigate carbon emissions. Further, to expose fellows to different ways of tackling issues and different cultural and political contexts. The trustees and other advisors will be available to provide a support network if required.

The Selection Committee is especially interested in achieving the following objectives:

  • A two-way exchange of learning between the fellow and the host community.
  • The empowerment (new knowledge, precedents, comparators etc) and leadership development of fellows and host communities.
  • Both parties being able to disseminate and cascade findings amongst their own communities of contacts.
  • The provision of the new knowledge to the wider group involved in theme's activities.
  • The involvement of fellows in future activities of the Trust on the theme of climate change.
  • The development of wider networks of practitioners, academics and policy makers interested in this and related topics at local, national and international levels.

The fellow must be prepared to spend significant time working in and with one or more rural community affected by economic, social and environmental impacts of climate change or related mitigation measures. In most cases they will do this in association with a local government or non-government organization that has expressed interest. They must also be prepared to attend at least one workshop during the next two years to present and discuss their findings. They must also engage in on-going web based dialogue with other interested parties about their topic. The workshop will be attended by experts and interested organizations to ensure that the matters raised are not lost and can be taken forward if appropriate. It is hoped that after this workshop there will be some form of paper or book bringing together the work of all the fellows and the outcomes of the workshop.

The fellow must produce a report or some other form of written output. However, the Trust also encourages the use of newer media, where relevant, such as video, film or other communication systems, including the Internet: a working knowledge of the chosen media should be clearly shown.

Applicants may be of any nationality or origin although preference will be given at this stage to those working in the Third World or from the poorest regions of the wider Europe. Particular attention will be given to applications from Asia, South and Central America, and North and East Africa. The Committee would also welcome enquiries from those acting on behalf of individuals who would not normally be in a position to see the advertisement and might thus be unable to submit an application.

£15,000 in total is available from which up to three fellowships are expected to be awarded in the current round. The exact amount awarded will depend on the Trust's analysis of the work to be undertaken by the fellow, the suitability of the candidate to undertake the work, their motivation, and the realism and reasonableness of the costs. Co-funding of Fellowships from interested parties will be very welcome, as this will allow greater diversity.

Written applications must be made on no more than five pages of A4 paper, and guidelines for these applications will be sent to intending applicants.

The closing date for applications for the Fellowships is the 30th August 2006.

Applications should be sent to: The Arkleton Trust, The Old Golf House, Rectory Road, Streatley, Berks, RG8 9QA England or email: arkleton@enstoneuk.demon.co.uk
